Learning academic words via sentence and essay writing: Any signs of increased cognitive load?
Principal investigator: dr Breno Barreto Silva
This project investigates the lexical learning potential of different writing tasks. Participants are provided with keywords that they must incorporate in sentences or in argumentative essays, restricted by a time limit or not. At the core of the project is the idea that different writing tasks may demand more or less cognitive resources from learners, and that tasks that demand more resources (e.g., timed essays), may yield less lexical learning.
I use techniques typical of of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research, such as tests measuring lexical learning; techniques typical of L2 Writing research, such as measures of textual accuracy, fluency, lexical and grammatical complexity; and techniques more commonly employed in psycholinguistic studies, such as working memory tasks.
